Summer Youth Leadership Program
Program Description
Our goal is to foster the next generation of heroes and leaders, and we start by providing students with this unique opportunity! Our summer program is an intense 8-week course full of engaging activities, lessons, and competitions. Throughout the course, our students will prepare for their future adventure as heroes by studying for the SAT, learning and practicing new skills, and meeting new friends and mentors along the way.

PROGRAM DETAILS AND BENEFITS
SAT Tutoring
While many may not see going to college as
heroic, we at the Heroes Academy think differently. We know the courage it takes to fight for an opportunity many like us never get to have. So, throughout the 8 weeks of the Heroes Academy, our students attend an SAT prep class taught by our Lead Instructor, Marlon Becerra. Marlon has over eight years of experience helping students prepare for the SAT and apply to college. Marlon received his Bachelor of the Arts from Hampshire College and his Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School.
Life Skill Workshops
Heroes need more skills than just studying, so we partner with community practitioners to host a series of workshops on important life skills for our future heroes. Our workshops are designed to keep our students engaged through practicing their newly learned skills in group activities and competitions. By hosting interactive workshops, our students are given the opportunity to be exposed to a variety of career paths, while also networking with local community members. Some of our previously hosted life skills workshops have been Public Speaking, Debating, Job searching, Resume and Cover Letter Writing, Interviewing, Networking, Researching, Budgeting, and First Aid.
Field Trips
Challenging ourselves and learning new skills each day can get overwhelming. However, disengaging and having fun is part of The Heroes Academy. Students will have the chance to go on multiple field trips and build bonds with their fellow classmates and alumni. Thanks to our amazing partners, the trips are also free. Our previously held field trips were at Highwind Archery, Area 53, Mountain Creek, Waterpark, Great Adventure, Skirmish Paintball.
Student Meals
We recognize that our students are still growing and need plenty to eat as they develop into the heroes they are meant to be. Thanks to the support of our community partners, we ensure that our students have access to fresh and delicious food, which is essential for their optimal functioning and learning.
Application Process
Step 1: Fill out the application form.
Step 2: Students will be invited to a virtual interview with a Heroes Academy staff member. Prior to the interview, students are welcome (not required) to submit any additional information/documentation, including: a resume, teacher's recommendation, and/or an optional writing statement (no more than 250 words) on what type of hero do they want to become. No student would be denied an interview because they chose not to provide additional information.
Step 3: Selected students may be invited for a final round of interviews with our lead instructor.
Step 4: Accepted students will receive their acceptance letter with an enrollment form to fill out with their parents and must return the form promptly.

Applicants must be:

A local resident of New York City or the 5 boroughs

Must be entering 10th, 11th grade or 12th grade. We do accept applicant entering the 10th grade, if the applicant has already taken geometry in high school.
There is no grade or test score cut-off. The application committee reviews each application holistically, focusing on the students' ambitions and work ethic.
